Every morning, I wake up and get ready for work with a sense of joy. Sure, I have some mornings that are worse than others, where my hair looks like its standing on end and I can barely see through the brain fog. I wake up knowing that what I do in the world matters, and that I am building a better world for future generations. I wake up with a purpose. And that fuels me. Since I was a kid, I cared about the environment. I was very shy when I was young, and spent time in the park next to my house growing up. I knew every tree, played with tadpoles and would take naps in secret places. Every summer I would do the same at my grandma’s house on Camano Island. One summer, I returned and the forest I played in had been demolished. It was a dirt wasteland, with twisted stumps, harsh sun, and no sounds of forest life. The forest I loved was gone. I asked my mom what happened. She told me that the developers tore down the trees to build houses. To me, the houses weren’t worth nearly as much as the forest. Later in life, I decided to study environmental science because I knew it could make a difference for the planet. I had heard about people who were using environmental science to help businesses like the developers reduce their environmental impact. I knew it was for me. I studied, it took a lot of dedication. Organic chemistry alone was a voyage only for the most dedicated. That journey led me to decades of doing this new thing that we now call business sustainability. The advantage of that work is that every day, my purpose gives me intrinsic motivation to go to work, and to do a good job. I’ve learned though, from working with and mentoring hundreds of people, that you can find intrinsic motivation in what you do every single day. You just have to find that purpose that drives you effortlessly. In this blog, we are going to explore topics like what is purpose? How do I lead with purpose? How do I avoid burnout? What can I do as a leader to show up with purpose every day? None of us are perfect, but we can let purpose help us drive excellence.
